Believe it or not, a lot of people haven´t tried a sushi dish. If you didn't grow up eating sushi or you aren't very aware of the Japanese theme, you may be confused when looking at a sushi roll menu if the restaurant chooses to leave out the descriptions. Let´s break down some common sushi terms and recipes so you can know what to order when visiting a sushi bar or restaurant.

Nigiri Sushi

A topping, usually fish, is served on top of sushi rice.

Not all nigiri is raw, though this dish is best for people who want to appreciate the flavor of the fish, shellfish, or other toppings 

Chirashi Sushi

Chirashi translates to "scattered” in Japanese. Chirashi sushi, also called chirashizushi, is seasoned sushi rice topped with ingredients. 

Maki Sushi

Maki sushi comes from the word Maku ,which means roll like sea weed roll. Or nori. Another type of maki is temaki meaning hand roll into a cone shape. 

Temaki Sushi

Sushi that has been hand-rolled into a cone shape.



Inari Sushi

Dish consisting of sushi rice stuffed inside fried tofu pouches. 



Gonkan Sushi

Made by vertically wrapping a smaller nigiri sushi style rice oval in seaweed and using the space above the rice and 'walls' of seaweed to contain the toppings 



Oshi Sushi

Sushi is also known as pressed sushi or box-sushi. This method comes from Osaka.



Narezushi

Basically fermented fish pickled with rice.
